Magic Origins

Magic Origins
Set Name: Magic Origins
Overview: Magic Origins was the last in a long line of Core Sets. These sets were designed for newer players, focusing on simple mechanics, mono-colored cards, and reprints of older cards. Magic Origins’ storyline centered around the origin stories of the game’s most iconic Planeswalkers; the Gatewatch. Gideon, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, and Nissa formed the core group of characters for multiple sets, roaming the multiverse and protecting several planes from cosmic threats. Each of the Planeswalkers’ homeworlds is featured in the set, giving it a feel that spans the diverse locales of Magic’s history.

Each of the members of the Gatewatch received their own Legendary creature/Planeswalker card. These “Flip Planeswalkers” each have a different condition that causes them to transform into their Planeswalker incarnation, re-enacting the moment when they gained their “spark” and became Planeswalkers. Jace, Vryn’s Prodigy // Jace, Telepath Unbound is a particularly noteworthy card. As many might expect, a two-mana Jace turned out to be incredibly powerful. During it’s time in Standard it was dominant and pervasive, slotting into a variety of different decks, including Bant Company, which at times bordered on a ban-worthy metagame powerhouse. The “Pain Lands” which originally debuted in Ice Age were reprinted in Magic Origins, finding new life with the inception of the colorless mana symbol from Oath of the Gatewatch.

Magic Origins included less reprints than previous core sets. As part of this push to include new cards, the set also featured new mechanics. Reknown rewarded creatures for connecting with an opponent by providing +1/+1 counters and often an ability that would turn on once the creature was deemed “Reknowned”. Spell Mastery changes the text of an instant or sorcery, if you already have two instants or sorceries in your graveyard, and a creature with Menace can only be blocked by two or more creatures.
